Spotify Remix Studio

Ok, I`ll admit straight away there may be a few bees in my bonnet still buzzing around regarding the Spotify remix studio thing we brought you news of a short while ago here. So much so, there`s a high chance this could become something of a mini series of blog posts, because there`s so much Spotify could do with this new service one kinda needs to get some thoughts out into the open, on the off chance, A, I`m right, (bragging rights-yay) and B, (mainly) because things are still in development over at Spotify HQ ! you know? hehe.

But where to start?

What about a clue ? that would give it all away tho, even if the title and pic did not already..

Either way, also, because we can, lets name the baby ..before it`s born ! (just for ease of use)

How does “Spotify Remix Studio” sound ? Good uh?

Now, if it was to be named that, ask yourself, would you be happy paying that extra moolah on top of your Spotify sub, only to find you can only make totally legit Mash Ups & AI Remixes and Cover Versions inside the app? Not that that isnt groundbreaking enough already lol.
Surely you might be wanting more of an “experience”, or even maybe something akin to an online DAW to muck about with? More news on the “Experience” side of things later. For now, lets stick with the DAW idea.

I was going to mail Spotify and plead with them privately, but since I have no shame left, Im proud enough to beg publicly.

Dearest Spotify,

Welcome to ClubRemixer. Its all been worked out and decided and verified via AI, that you need to incorporate some kind of wonderful D.A.W. in your ongoing development that you have for general users, and for us Dj`s, Remixers, and Mash Up artists.. which btw, we would like you to call “Remix Studio”. I`m kinda hoping it turns out like a great psuedo add on to CR nobody knew they ever wanted haha! Anyway Lu, I have news. You are going to have to use mainly Stems within the new service. Or at the very least, Instrumentals and Acapellas. AI splitting of tracks is going to be no bueno. It has been calculated that artist stems are going to have to be used to keep quality and consistency up across the platform, instead of you guys relying on masters and splitting them with AI.

Wanna know why?

Compute. Expensivo. Investment. Expensivo. More Slop.

In reality, if there millions of users all splitting tracks up at all at once, its all going to be super slow, costly, and “results will still vary”.

Bad rep.

Stems in a “load it quick” online DAW. No-Brainer. And cheaper. Stems straight from artist. Free.

Yeah, keep the AI, but not so much as the focus.

Add a sprinkle of Mixed in Key to the Stems library and the DAW, make sure the time stretching and pitch shifting are pukka and the jobs a good un !

More thoughts and conjecture coming soon !
